Register your Caravan to take it Abroad

Did you know a caravan weighing over 750kg needs to be registered to drive through and into most European countries?

Planning a caravan trip through mainland Europe this year?

If your caravan weighs more than 750 kg (gross weight), you must register it before you drive through or into most European countries. The UK Government requires all trailers - including touring caravans over 750 kg - to be registered under the Trailer Registration Scheme before being taken abroad.

Registration is essential to ensure your caravan has its own unique registration number and certificate, which may be checked at border crossings or during roadside enforcement in many European destinations. The process is straightforward and can be completed online in minutes with just six pieces of information:

  • trailer manufacturer
  • trailer type (e.g., caravan)
  • vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis number
  • gross and unladen weights of the trailer
  • an email address
  • a debit or credit card.

While this rule applies to most EU, EEA and other countries across Europe, there are a few exceptions. Trailers and caravans being towed solely to Ireland, Cyprus, Malta or Spain do not need to be registered - unless you drive through another country where registration is required en route.

For example, if you plan to travel through France on your way to Spain, you’ll still need to have your caravan registered.

Registration costs around £26 for a first-time registration, and you’ll receive a certificate that must be carried with you when travelling abroad.
